Snow-covered pine forest with golden winter light

One of the things that surprised us most about living and working in Central Oregon is how distinctly different each season feels — and how each one brings its own magic. If you’re thinking about relocating to Sunriver, here’s what a full year actually looks like.

Spring (March–May)

Spring in Sunriver is a quiet season and one of the best-kept secrets. Snow melts, wildflowers start popping up along the bike paths, and the rivers begin to swell with snowmelt. You can still ski Mt. Bachelor into April most years, and the community is blissfully uncrowded. Highs climb from the 40s into the 60s. It’s a great time to explore before the summer rush.

Summer (June–August)

This is prime time. Long sunny days, highs in the 80s, and every outdoor activity imaginable. The bike paths are buzzing, the Deschutes River is perfect for floating and paddleboarding, and the golf courses are immaculate. Summer evenings are golden — literally. The sunsets here are extraordinary, and the dry air makes everything feel comfortable even on warm days.

Fall (September–November)

Fall might be Chance’s favorite season here. The aspens turn gold, the crowds thin out, and the hiking is spectacular. Temperatures are crisp — 40s to 60s — and the high desert air is crystal clear. This is when the community feels most like a tight-knit neighborhood. Fall festivals, community potlucks, and the annual anticipation of ski season create a special energy.

Winter (December–February)

Winter transforms Sunriver into a snow globe. Mt. Bachelor is just 30 minutes away, and the community’s own trails become snowshoeing and cross-country skiing routes. Temperatures hover in the 20s–30s, and the 300+ days of annual sunshine mean you’re often skiing under blue skies. The holiday season in the Village is magical, and there’s nothing like a fire in the woodstove after a powder day.

Sunriver Seasons: FAQ

Click a question to reveal the answer.

When is the best time to visit Sunriver, Oregon?

September. Warm days, cool nights, golden aspen, empty trails, affordable rentals, and the kids are back in school so crowds thin out. If you can only come once, come in September.

When is mud season in Sunriver?

Late March through April. It’s the one stretch that tests you — snowmelt, dreary skies, and not-yet-green ground. But it’s brief. By early May, wildflowers are popping.

How long does winter last in Sunriver, Oregon?

Snow typically arrives in November and the season runs through March. Mt. Bachelor often skis into May. It’s a real winter — snow tires, chains in the car, the works — but also one of the prettiest seasons here.

How crowded does Sunriver get in summer?

Mid-July through mid-August is peak — The Village, SHARC, and popular trailheads get busy. Locals time around it: go early (before 9am), go late (after 5pm), or head to the less-famous trails and you’ll barely notice.
