Fly fishing on a scenic river

The Deschutes River doesn’t just flow through Sunriver—it defines the community. This legendary waterway, winding through volcanic rock and ponderosa forest, offers some of the finest fly fishing in the Pacific Northwest. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or someone who’s never held a rod, the Deschutes has a stretch of water waiting for you.

The River Through Sunriver

The Upper Deschutes near Sunriver runs cold and clear, fed by springs and snowmelt from the Cascades. Rainbow trout and brown trout are the primary targets here, with fish averaging 10 to 16 inches and the occasional trophy lurking in deeper pools. The river through and around Sunriver is largely wadeable, with gravel bottoms and gentle riffles that make it accessible for fly fishers of varying skill levels.

Several access points within Sunriver put you on the water in minutes. The Meadows area, the bridge near the Nature Center, and the paths along the southern stretches all offer excellent fishing. Many residents develop a morning routine—coffee, a short bike ride to the river, and an hour of casting before the day begins. It’s the kind of lifestyle detail that’s hard to appreciate until you’re living it.

Hatches and Seasons

Central Oregon’s dry climate and high desert environment create unique hatches that keep fishing interesting throughout the year. Spring brings the famous Mother’s Day caddis hatch, when clouds of insects bring trout to the surface in feeding frenzies. Summer sees prolific pale morning dun and green drake hatches. Fall offers some of the best dry fly fishing of the year with October caddis. Even winter has its moments for nymph fishers willing to brave the cold.

Chance picked up fly fishing after moving to Central Oregon and calls it one of the unexpected bonuses of the area. “I came for the real estate opportunities,” he says, “but the river keeps me here in a different way. There’s something about standing in the Deschutes at golden hour that resets everything.”

Getting Started

If you’re new to fly fishing, Sunriver is an ideal place to learn. Several local outfitters offer guided trips and casting lessons on the Deschutes. The Sunriver Marina rents basic fishing gear, and the fly shops in Bend—like Fly & Field Outfitters—are staffed by knowledgeable anglers who are happy to point beginners in the right direction. An Oregon fishing license is required and can be purchased online through ODFW.

For those considering a move to Sunriver, proximity to the Deschutes is often a factor in which neighborhood to target. Properties backing to the river or within easy biking distance of access points carry a premium, but even homes deeper in the community are never more than a short ride from the water. It’s one of the many quality-of-life details we love helping clients navigate.

Fly Fishing the Deschutes: Common Questions

Click a question to reveal the answer.

When is the best time to fly fish the Deschutes River near Sunriver?

Late May through October is the prime window. The salmonfly hatch in late May and early June is legendary on the Lower Deschutes, while the Upper and Middle stretches near Sunriver fish beautifully all summer with caddis, PMDs, and hoppers into October.

Do I need a guide to fly fish the Deschutes River?

It’s not required, but strongly recommended your first time out. The Deschutes has tricky wading, fast current, and reading the water is a learned skill. One half-day with a local guide will save you a whole summer of figuring it out on your own.

Do I need a fishing license for the Deschutes River in Oregon?

Yes — anyone age 12 or older needs an Oregon fishing license. You can buy one online at myodfw.com in about two minutes, or in person at Sunriver Fly Shop, Sportsman’s Warehouse in Bend, or any Fred Meyer. You’ll also need a Columbia Basin Endorsement for the Deschutes.

What flies work best on the Deschutes River?

A small box goes a long way: Elk Hair Caddis in size 14–16, Parachute Adams, Purple Haze, a few hoppers in late summer, and Pheasant Tail or Copper John nymphs. When the salmonflies are on, a big Chubby Chernobyl is your best friend.
