Family enjoying outdoor recreation in nature

One of the biggest misconceptions about Sunriver is that you need a resort pass to enjoy it. While the resort does offer incredible amenities, there’s a whole world of family fun available to every homeowner and visitor — no pass required.

1. The Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory

This hidden gem offers nature exhibits, botanical gardens, and one of the best public observatories in the Pacific Northwest. On clear nights (which is most nights in Central Oregon), the stargazing programs are absolutely mesmerizing. Kids especially love the live animal exhibits featuring native species.

2. Floating the Little Deschutes

The Little Deschutes River runs right through the community, and on warm summer days, it becomes a gentle lazy river perfect for families. Grab a tube, launch near the Meadow Recreation Area, and float for an hour through some of the most peaceful scenery you’ve ever seen.

3. Bike the Pathways to Fort Rock Park

Fort Rock Park has playgrounds, basketball courts, and open fields perfect for everything from soccer to frisbee. The ride there on the paved bike paths is half the adventure — winding through forest and crossing wooden bridges.

4. Explore the Deschutes National Forest

The forest trails accessible from Sunriver’s southern boundary are spectacular. The Benham Falls trail is a family-friendly hike to a thundering waterfall on the Deschutes River — dramatic, accessible, and always impressive.

5. Village Shopping & Ice Cream

Sometimes the simplest outings are the best. The Village at Sunriver has toy shops, candy stores, galleries, and several great restaurants. It’s the kind of place where kids can run ahead on the sidewalk and parents can actually relax — something Tianna particularly appreciates about raising a family in this kind of community.

Sunriver With Kids (No Resort Pass Needed): FAQ

Click a question to reveal the answer.

What can you do in Sunriver without a resort pass?

A surprising amount. The 33 miles of paved paths, river access, Deschutes National Forest trailheads, The Village shops and restaurants, the Nature Center & Observatory, and the Benham Falls ride are all open to everyone — no pass required.

Are the Sunriver bike paths open to non-guests?

Yes. The paved path system is public within Sunriver. The resort pool and SHARC water park require passes, but the paths, the river access, and nearby forest trailheads are open to anyone.

What are indoor activities in Sunriver for a rainy day?

The Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory, the High Desert Museum in Bend (15 min away), drop-in hours at the Boys & Girls Club, and puzzle/game cafés at The Village are all solid rainy-day options.

Is the Sunriver Nature Center good for young kids?

Extremely. Live raptors, a walkable wildlife trail, planetarium shows, and hands-on exhibits — kids ages 3 through 10 are in heaven. Pack snacks and plan for 2–3 hours.
